4th Annual Grill on the Hill 2022

Friday is for setup. Saturday is for some serious tastin' & BBQin'! This competition is open to any level of cooking skills as well as those who are just here for a good time! If you and your best friends are looking for a fun weekend up north and a place to share your love of grilling with other barbeque enthusiasts, this is the place for you. You will get the opportunity to share your special skill and creativity with the “tasters” who will be on the search for the best BBQ.

You are to provide your own grill but are limited to charcoal, wood, or pellet type ( no gas).

There will be one first-place winner chosen in each category of the People’s Choice competition. Winners are chosen by the “tasters”.

In addition to the people’s choice awards, there will be a team of judges who will make their rounds to each team’s booth. They will be judging each team using the following categories on a rating scale 1-10 ( 10 being the best):

  • Appearance
  • Taste
  • Tenderness

We will award  1st, 2nd and 3rd place for the “Judges Choice” competition.

Along with the competition you will find:

  • BBQ tasting
  • Celebrity Chef demonstrations
  • Vendors Booth featuring items such as grilling equipment and accessories, specialty spices and sauces, local arts and crafts
  • Beer Tents that feature local breweries pouring samples
  • Live entertainment
  • Live Radio Coverage
  • Lawn Games

Taster Packages:

We're excited to try some of the latest and greatest brews while we stuff our faces with amazing BBQ. Arbor Brewing and Snowbelt Brewery are just two of the awesome breweries joining us so far!

What's included with registration?

Backyard Team:

  • $300 Entry Fee (good for up to 4 cooking team members)
    • 10x10 space to be used for cooking/supplies
    • One 8ft table
    • 1 trash bin with additional liners
    • (4) taster bracelets
    • (4) beer samplings per team member
    • Meat for Grilling Competition – You get your choice of one of these protein options:
      • #48 brisket
      • #60 pork ribs ( 24 racks)
      • #47 bone-in pork butt

Recommended for teams

Recommended to Bring:

  • 10X10 tent with strong anchors
  • Coolers; Treetops will provide you with two 25 lb bags of ice, additional bags of ice are an additional cost
  • Serving pans with Sterno
  • Small cups/trays to serve the food to guest
  • Utensils
  • Extension cords
  • Any special decorations or signage: Aprons, hats, anything to be memorable and fun

Restriction: No outside prepared food allowed. All food needs to be prepared on-site. Allotted proteins are to be used at the event and no taken home to ensure “tasters” can enjoy every team’s creation. Teams can be disqualified from the competition if it has been determined that not all proteins have been prepared and served on-site.

  • Rolls/breads that are bought from a commercial store

Cooler Inspections:

  • Cooks may not bring in their own alcoholic beverage on property

Categories & Prizes

This year tasters will get to vote for Best Ribs, Best Pork, Best Brisket, and the overall favorite People's Choice Award.

Joe Pichey

Joe Pichey of Go Blue BBQ and 2016 Big Green Egg “EggFest” National Champion will be at Grill on the Hill grilling up Big Green Egg Favorites for guests to enjoy.  Joe is contributor to the Tailgate Tuesday feature every week during  the UM football season.  He teaches grilling classes in Texas where he currently resides. Joe is originally from Flint, Michigan and will be traveling up for the Grill on the Hill for the second consecutive year.
