Spring Awakening: From Winter Wonderland to Golfing Paradise

As the last patches of snow melt away under the warming Michigan sun, Treetops Resort in Gaylord begins its annual metamorphosis.

The transition from a bustling ski destination to a world-class golf resort is a meticulous process that spans several weeks and involves every inch of our 1,500 acres.

Farewell to Winter

While ski enthusiasts enjoy their final runs down our slopes, our grounds crew is already hard at work.

The process begins with a thorough assessment of our five championship golf courses, which together encompass over 3,000 acres of carefully manicured turf and strategically placed hazards.

Thawing out

The first step in awakening our courses is allowing nature to take its course. As temperatures rise, we monitor the thawing process carefully:

  1. Snow mold check: As the snow recedes, we inspect for gray and pink snow mold, common fungal diseases that can damage turf during winter.
  2. Drainage assessment: We identify any areas where snowmelt is pooling, which could indicate drainage issues that need addressing.
  3. Frost heave inspection: We look for areas where freezing and thawing cycles may have pushed rocks to the surface or created uneven terrain.

The great Spring clean-up

Once the ground has thawed sufficiently, our team launches into a comprehensive clean-up operation:

  1. Debris removal: Winter storms often leave branches and other debris scattered across the courses. Every fairway, rough, and green is meticulously cleared.
  2. Sand bunker renovation: Our 225+ sand bunkers are assessed, cleaned, and replenished as needed. Proper drainage is ensured to prevent water accumulation.
  3. Cart path repair: Any damage to our extensive network of cart paths is identified and repaired.

Waking up the greens

Our putting surfaces, designed by renowned architects like Robert Trent Jones Sr., Tom Fazio, and Rick Smith, require special attention:

  1. Removing winter covers: Protective covers are carefully removed to prevent damage to the delicate turf beneath.
  2. Initial mowing: The first mow of the season is a delicate operation, gradually lowering the height to avoid stressing the grass.
  3. Soil testing: We analyze soil samples to determine nutrient needs and pH levels.
  4. Aeration and topdressing: These processes improve soil structure, reduce compaction, and promote healthy root growth.

Fairways and tee boxes

Our fairways and tee boxes, spanning nearly 350 acres, undergo their own revival process:

  1. Overseeding: Any areas that suffered winter damage are reseeded to ensure lush, even coverage.
  2. Fertilization: Based on soil test results, we apply carefully calculated amounts of fertilizer to promote vigorous spring growth.
  3. Weed control: Early spring is crucial for preventing weed infestations that could mar the pristine conditions our golfers expect.

Irrigation system revival

Our state-of-the-art irrigation system, essential for maintaining optimal playing conditions throughout the golf season, requires its own wake-up routine:

  1. Pipe inspection: Miles of underground pipes are checked for leaks or damage from winter freezing.
  2. Pump station maintenance: Our central pump station undergoes thorough servicing to ensure reliable operation.
  3. Sprinkler head check: Each of our thousands of sprinkler heads is inspected and adjusted for proper coverage.

Final touches

As opening day approaches, our attention turns to the details that elevate Treetops from great to exceptional:

  1. Driving range preparation: Our expansive practice facilities are groomed to perfection.
  2. Course accessories: Tee markers, flags, ball washers, and other on-course amenities are placed and polished.
  3. Landscaping: Flowers are planted, and ornamental areas are spruced up to enhance the visual appeal of our courses.

Ready for the first drive

After weeks of tireless effort, the moment arrives when our courses are ready to welcome the season's first golfers. The fairways stretch out like emerald carpets, the greens roll true and fast, and the entire property exudes the promise of unforgettable rounds to come.

At Treetops Resort, the transition from winter wonderland to golfing paradise is more than just a change of seasons – it's a testament to our commitment to excellence in providing world-class golfing experiences.

As the first tee shot of spring soars down the fairway, we take pride in knowing that every detail, from the smallest blade of grass to the grandest vista, has been carefully prepared for another spectacular season of golf.
