About the Au Sable River

Canoeing in Michigan doesn’t get better than floating down the Au Sable River. Designated a blue-ribbon brown trout river by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the Au Sable (“aw saw-bull”) flows east all the way from Grayling to Oscoda, ultimately emptying into Lake Huron. Much of the river forms the northern border of the Huron National Forest, so the scenery from your canoe is unbeatable.

Each July, the river plays host to the Au Sable River Canoe Marathon, a 120-mile overnight race from Grayling to the lake. It’s an intense experience for racers and spectators alike!
