Treetops: Michigan's Premier Golf Destination

We arguably have the best collection of golf courses in the Midwest, boasting 81 holes of golf on spectacular terrain totaling five award-winning courses inspired and professionally designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., Tom Fazio, and Rick Smith. Treetops Resort is also proudly recognized as having the #1 Par 3 Course in North America: Threetops.

Fazio Premier

A tree-lined green on the Fazio Premier course with the sun rising in the distance.

As the only golf course in Michigan designed by Tom Fazio, Premier is a special treat for Michigan golfers. With rolling fairways and just a single water hazard, it’s player-friendly. On the other hand, with steep slopes and plenty of dogleg turns, Premier still challenges even the most seasoned players. Each hole presents its own challenge and beauty. In fact, when Tom Fazio was asked to name a signature hole, he replied “all of them.”

Smith Signature

Treetops Resort Northern Michigan signature golf course

In 2018, Golftime Magazine named the Signature the best golf course in Michigan, and we think you’ll agree. With all her sloping mounds and narrow fairways, the Rick Smith-designed Signature will keep your whole group on their toes. This course is the perfect blend between modern design and the greatest classic designs from across the globe. In fact, Smith prepared to build this course (his first 18-hole design) with a month-long trip to Ireland and Scotland to study the greatest designs in the world. Play the Signature and you’ll see plenty of these characteristics.

Jones Masterpiece

Amazing Treetops golf resort

When Masterpiece opened in 1987, Golf Digest named it the second-best new course in the country. Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed it with deep ravines, plentiful sand traps, tough pin placements, numerous water hazards, and constant elevation changes. The Masterpiece is widely considered the most challenging course at Treetops; some say it’s the most challenging in Michigan. Take time on each green to look back at the fairway, as this course is almost as beautiful backwards as it is forward. In fact, RTJ, Sr. drafted a design that routed this course in the exact reverse of what you see today.

Smith Tradition

Rick Smith’s Tradition is the most player-friendly course at Treetops. Tradition has less elevation change, wider fairways, and a more natural landscape than the other courses on the property. Four tee box options and few hidden shots make for a pleasant and confidence-building round of golf. This is the only design on property that gives you that open links feel, giving you the opportunity to play a style of golf that is firm and fast. A little brown on this course is exactly the way it was meant to be. We think you’ll have a blast.
